Summary0009096: Tool options on canvas
DescriptionThe way tools options are available now is somewhat counter-productive. If you look e.g. at GIMP 2.7 from master branch in Git you'll see that the new Text tool has a compact on-canvas transparent palette that allows changing typeface, font size and setting kerning, tracking and baseline shift. After having used it a lot I can say that while it does need work, it's much better that doing the same from a sidebar palette, because focus of your attention stays in one place.

Now, many things can't possibly fit canvas, but there are things that would definitely benefit from similar approach. I'm specifically referring to the Path Tool's palette and the new Mesh Tool options palette.

As for the Path tool, I'd rather see a combination of Inkscape's path tool and on-canvas palette. I'll file a separate report on that.

Please note that one of GIMP's GSoC projects this year is implementing a whole infrastructure for drawing tools options on canvas.

As a matter of fact, GIMP 2.7 (Git again) already draws dialogs of all color tools on canvas in fullscreen mode.

Please provide programmers or patches for these requests.. we have no spare resources.

i guess a first step will be to provide use cases and mockups on how to implement this in scribus.

imo, showing how gimp manages text is not that useful, since in scribus you want much more control on your text: that toolbar would be much bigger and hence probably useless!
(i don't think users will be interested in having just italics and bold in there... we should have ctrl+shift+b and ctrl+shift+i for it... if we ever find a way to reliably detect or define italics and bolds... but i disgress.)

i would like to see how gimp can integrate "adjust color curves" in that framework in order to be able to judge if it may be useful for scribus...

putting the controls on top of the frame won't be very useful for most people, either: in scribus text frames tend to be much longer and you will probably prefer to go to the PP than to scroll up just to be able to see the toolbar.

still, the concept is imho interesting and should be related to the work pierre did for the modularization of the PP.
what i personally would welcome is a personalized and content specific toolbar which would show up at the cursor place on a key press (i'd love to use the tab key for it...). but this is just a dream!

"imo, showing how gimp manages text is not that useful"

Absolutely. It's just an example of existing solution. What would be the point of referring to something that doesn't exist yet? :)

"i would like to see how gimp can integrate "adjust color curves" in that framework in order to be able to judge if it may be useful for scribus..."

1. Build Git
2. Start GIMP, open some image
3. F11 for fullscreen mode
4. Fire up curves dialog

It's crude, but it works. I'd be interested to see effects from the effects stack in Scribus working on canvas instead of the tiny preview area (that was also color UNmanaged last time I tried).

"what i personally would welcome is a personalized and content specific toolbar which would show up at the cursor place"

That's very much in the lines of the proposal :)
