Summary0015813: Indigo UI: remove the item name from the Properties Palette
DescriptionThe item name has a very prominent place in the Properties palette but has little to no use for the vast majority of the users.

In Martin's proposal, the item name is moved to an "advanced" part of the palette.

Personally, I would like to avoid to have an "advanced" button (of course some more "specific" feature can be hidden away under collapsing tabs, but i would not use the general term "advanced").
My idea is: whenever possible to have an obvious place for each feature, and avoid the "capture all" advanced.

In the case of the item name, there are already enough places where it's shown:

- the context menu
- the Outline window

My proposal:

- remove the item name from the PP
- make the item name editable in the Outline window
- in the Preflight Verifier replace the item name by a preview of the content (for text frames the first few words, for image frames a preview or the name of the image, for the other frames a bitmap preview (in the long term?)... if ever needed... i think that IRL the place where more info is needed is really the text frame!)

As for the preflight verifier, preview is nice but should not replace internal name, because preview is ambiguous when there are lots of identical images (layout decoration for example) or texts. Better leave as is, or use both : preview thumb aswell as internal name.

Generating preview for all items that generate a warning could be quite slow also.

imo, users who do not set a custom name do not get any further help by seeing the name.
they just click on the warning and scribus will select the affected item.
the name does not give them any further information.

for user who want to set and / or the see custom names i think that it should be ok to open the outline window and click on the affected item.
i'm also fine with optionally having the item names in the preflight verifier, if the default is not to show them.

concerning the previews i wonder which one are really important to the users.

personally, i'm mostly concerned by empty / overflowing text and making sure that i'm fine with images with low res to stay this way.
i would probably only need previews for low res images.

i wonder for what kind of items people would need a preview.

four years later, indigo UI has started making it into scribus and we need to talk again about the item name.
to me it feels more and as a stranger in the properties palette.

martin, jean, craig: what do you think of removing it from the properties palette and make the name in the outline palette editable.
the user could double click on the name or use the context menu to rename in place the item.

if you (plural) agree that this is now desired, i would be glad to work on a patch for it.

if there are concerns that keeping the outline palette open might make scribus be too slow on big / complex document, i think we could add a single item mode.

we could have a selector that allows to pick
- all the item in the document (as it is now),
- the ones on the current page, or
- the selected item(s) (and its "children").

As for restricting the view, it could be the same as for file browsing : a file browser doesnt display ALL files on the hard drive. It only display the files in the choosend folder. And from there it's possible to navigatet to some child folder or to the parent folder.
Scribus could possibly propose the same type of browsing. It restricts the amount of computed and displayed items.
One can imagine refinements : in case there is only 1 child in an item, then it is open and browsed.
The start could be : a list of pages when there are several, or the top nodes of the current page, when there is only one.

First of all, I agree with removing the name input from XYZ as it is not intuitively associated with geometry.

I like the idea to extend the Outliner. From my point of view it is a standard in modern Software to edit the name of an item there. (see examples of Inkscape, Blender and Figma)

i like the (blender?) screenshot!

probably, it would be a very good idea to also move the "enable/disable exporting" to there (in the same way as it's done in the screenshot!)

on my side, i did some exploration on the outline palette.

currently, it's possible to double click on an item in the outline and it triggers (almost) the same action as if the item itself was double clicked.
i guess that the feature has been implemented, for editing grouped items.

- i guess that almost nobody knows about it.
- the action is not always usable (it is not for text frames, which is probably where it would be most useful)
- one can select with the alt key in the UI and then press E to get the same effect (and that works correctly!)
- (btw, selecting in the outline and then pressing E does not work either. and this should probably be fixed! it does not work when using the tool in the toolbar either.)
- The E (edit item) action should probably be added to the context menu in the outline palette (and probably also to the Edit main menu. The button in the toolbar is imo not really usable nor discoverable.

personally, if this is possible with qt, i would add an action for a slow double click (this the very same way for renaming things in most systems, like the mac os finder or the windows files explorer).
if it's not possible i would replace the current action for the double click and let it start the renaming.
