What do you mean? Blending and merging are totally different things. Do you mean blending layers with blend modes (available in 1.3.5+) or transparency flattening (issue 0000876)? |

In Gimp if one layer has a gradient going from 100% opacity to 0% opacity and a lower one has an image then the gradient blends into the image gradually. If you merge one layer into the other then the two become one. In Scribus you can't merge layers. In Scribus one can do it with layers or with overlapping items on the same layer. In either case we need to flatten things in advance of saving as e.g. pdf 1.3 which cannot handle layers or transparencies. |

Then what you need is transparency flattening. This is already covered by issue 0000876 |
