Summary | 0012111: IME input does not work correctly on Linux and Windows (Japanese, Chinese)
Description | Typing Japanese or Chinese in Scribus does not really work well. Several problems can be seen, both on Windows and Linux. For background information, reading this Suse blog post would be good: http://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/485635-fcitx-mozc-and-Libreoffice 1. When typing in the text frame directly (not in the story editor), the pre-edit text is not shown. This is also the case in some other applications, but there the pre-edit frame would appear somewhere else on the screen (not in the line itself, but at least somewhere; see the above mentioned post with a Libreoffice example). In Scribus, it does not appear anywhere at all, meaning that in effect you have to type blindly until you commit the pre-edit text to the text frame. I guess the problem is that the text frame does not use the standard Qt IME method for that. Typing in the story editor works better (see no. 2 with a problem though), because this uses the standard Qt widget. This can be seen because the story editor offers "Select IM" when right-clicking in the text field, the text frame does not. I don't know about Scribus internals, but this is a major problem making Scribus absolutely impossible to use with Asian languages. It would be better if Scribus used the standard Qt input method in the text frame, which works absolutely perfectly both under Windows and Linux. Always using the text editor to write a little bit text in a text frame is imho not feasible. 2. As mentioned, typing in the story editor is possible, but only if a CJK font is selected in advance. Typing CJK text in a western font will result that the text disappears immediately after being commited. Of course, a western font does not have the necessary glyphs and therefore cannot show the characters, but it would be better if the characters at least remained in the text and be shown with black boxes, then being able to select a font afterwards. This problem also applies to the text frame, where you can type (although blindly, see 1) only if a CJK font is selected. Please, please fix the first issue! Is it possible to use the standard Qt IME input for the text frames? If this is possible, this would immediately solve all problems at work flawlessly on Windows, Linux and Mac. Implementing an own method would presumabely work rather bad (see Gtk input as a extremely bad example for that). With the current behaviour, Scribus is unfortunately not usable for CJK languages :( Thanks!
